Description: DATING TO THE 1880’S THIS PIECE IS A CENTENNIAL FRENCH REVOLUTION BASTILLE DAY COSTUME THAT IS ORIGINAL TO THE LATE 1880’S, SUCH A VERY RARE FIND. THREE PIECE IN CONSTRUCTION AND IS FASHIONED OF A VERY RICH GOLDEN YELLOW AND RED STRIPED SILK SATIN. THE TOP IS CUT IN POLONAISE STYLE WITH PUFF FULLNESS AT EACH HIP AND LONG TAIL IN THE BUSTLE REAR WITH A WIDE SET SQUARE NECKLINE THAT HOOKS CLOSED IN THE CENTER FRONT WITH A PUFF FULL PANEL ATOP. INTERIOR IS LINED IN COTTON AND IS FULLY BONED. THE SKIRT HAS FINE PLEATING IN THE REAR WITH RUFFLES ALL ALONG THE BOTTOM HEM AND METALLIC GOLD LACE TRIMMING THE BOTTOM ALL THE WAY AROUND ABOVE THE RUFFLES. MATCHING TWISTED TIPPED CAP HAS THE METALLIC LACE RUNNING AROUND THE FRONT HALF. CONDITION: A COTTON PANEL WAS ADDED TO THE FRONT CLOSURE TO INCREASE THE SIZE SLIGHTLY WITH A TAB OF COTTON ADDED TO THE SKIRT AT THE WAISTBAND. HOOK AND EYES ARE NEEDED ON THE SKIRT WAISTBAND AS WELL AS THE PUFF PANEL THAT CROSSES OVER. SEVERAL VERY FAINT LIGHT BROWN SPOT STAINS ARE SEEN TO THE SIDE SKIRTING, EXTREMELY HARD TO NOTE, WITH SOME SIMILAR LIGHT PINHEAD STAINS ON THE CAP. THE STAINING IS SO HARD TO FIND. THE TOP HAS LIGHT DISCOLORATION UNDER THE ARMS WHERE THE RED HAS BLEED INTO THE GOLDEN STRIPES WITH SEVERAL SMALL STAINS ON THE REAR TAIL, UNSEEN FROM THE EXTERIOR, MORE EVIDENT ON THE UNDER SIDE. SUCH A VISUALLY STRIKING, MOST UNUSUAL ANTIQUE 1880’S ALL ORIGINAL BUSTLE ENSEMBLE.
