Photogravure (in French héliogravure) is a process for printing photographs, also sometimes used for reproductive intaglio printmaking. It is a photo-mechanical process whereby a copper plate is grained (adding a pattern to the plate) and then coated with a light-sensitive gelatin tissue which had been exposed to a film positive, and then etched, resulting in a high quality intaglio plate that can reproduce detailed continuous tones of a photograph. Because of its high quality and richness, photogravure was used for both original fine art prints in the form of photographs manipulated by various means on the negative and for photo-reproduction of works from other media such as paintings. A photogravure is the most sophisticated of the photomechanical processes. Strictly speaking, it's not a photograph. The image isn't made in a darkroom. Rather, the photographer's negative is transferred onto a copper plate, which is used to print or engrave the image with ink. Photogravure is a time-consuming, labor-intensive, costly process used today only by fine-art photographer-printmakers. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller (10 November 1759 – 9 May 1805) was a German poet, playwright, historian, philosopher, and physician. Schiller is considered by most Germans to be Germany's most important classical playwright. During the last seventeen years of his life (1788–1805), Schiller developed a productive, if complicated, friendship with the already famous and influential Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. They frequently discussed issues concerning aesthetics, and Schiller encouraged Goethe to finish works that he had left as sketches. This relationship and these discussions led to a period now referred to as Weimar Classicism. Together they founded the Weimar Theater, which became the leading theater in Germany. Their collaboration helped lead to a renaissance of drama in Germany. Schiller's philosophical work was particularly concerned with the question of human freedom, a preoccupation which also guided his historical research. Schiller is considered by most Germans to be Germany's most important classical playwright. Critics like F. J. Lamport and Erich Auerbach have noted his innovative use of dramatic structure and his creation of new forms, such as the melodrama and the bourgeois tragedy. For his achievements, Schiller was ennobled in 1802 by the Duke of Saxe-Weimar, adding the nobiliary particle "von" to his name. He remained in Weimar, Saxe-Weimar until his death at 45 from tuberculosis in 1805. CONDITION: ANTIQUARIAN FINE & UNREAD The spines are square, hinges and joints firm and pages tight. Many sections of the volumes are VERY tightly bound and remarkably appear unopened. Multiple leaves are not fully cut and joined together in these sections. The gilding appears to be completely intact. The spines are gently sun-lightened. The volumes show only light rubbing to extremities from minimal shelf wear over the past 120+ years. The boards are colorful and clean with sumptuous supple leather. The “Aesthetical and Philosophical Essays Volume I” has a light red mark on its fore-edge and Volume II of this work has more rubbing than the other volumes so could be considered NEAR FINE. All of the volumes’ interiors are clean with bright, untoned pages with no writing or foxing or even ghosting from the plates (remarkably rare!). Each volume has a decorative former owner bookplate on the front pastedown. There may be the scarce mark or sign of handling in places. An exquisitely bound and spectacular copy in remarkable condition for 120+-year-old volumes in ORIGINAL fine morocco of a RARE set of only 150 with stunning-photogravures and exceptional hand-colored frontispieces. A set that any bibliophile and collector of fine antiquarian sets would be proud to prominently display in his or her collection.
