Perhaps a few people still remember the names of Island musicians July Paka (and his wife, Hannah “Toots” Paka) and Juliana Walanika.July is credited with introducing the Hawaiian steel guitar to the United States, and Juliana, his mother, was said to have been a favorite singer of Queen Lili’uokalani.July, educated at the Royal School (originally the Chiefs’ Children’s School), was a courteous and polished gentleman, as well as a fine musician. He sang at Queen Lili’uokalani’s funeral in 1917.At 24, he took his steel guitar and Hawaiian music to the Mainland in 1899. The Hawaiian musicians played in vaudeville and at expositions, fairs, revivals, clubs and theaters throughout the United States and Canada. While in San Francisco that same year (where he was making a recording at the Edison plant with five other Hawaiian musicians, possibly the first group ever to record Hawaiian music) he met and married Toots Jones, a dancer featured in a touring Broadway show.Toots learned Hawaiian words and hula, designed costumes deliberately exposing her ankles, used her Big City showmanship and, with July’s music, created the group Toots Paka’s Hawaiians. They were an instant hit and became one of the most famous touring Hawaiian troupes on the Mainland during the first quarter century. In 1935, the 11-member “Toots Paka’s Hawaiians” played the high spot of the evening (30 minutes) at the exclusive costume ball in Madison Square Garden. Others on the program were Ethel and John Barrymore, Eva LaGalliene, the Dolly Sisters and Anna Pavlova.Toots and July were retired by the 1930s. They died a year apart, in Santa Monica, Calif., where they lived for almost 20 years: Toots in 1942, age 71; and July in 1943, age, 69 More Great Records on sale right now: CLICK ON THIS LINK TO SEE MORE GREAT RECORDS CLICK ON THIS LINK TO SEE ALL ITEMS - VINTAGE BOOKS, VICTROLA and TURNTABLE ITEMS, CDs, Books and DVDs http://shop.ebay.com/carsten_sf/m.html ==== A Quick NOTE ON GRADING AND SHIPPING: As you can see from my feedback, I try hard to earn your POSITIVE FEEDBACK and FIVE STAR RATINGS. If for any reason your transaction was NOT SATISFACTORY, pls contact me and I will work something out with you. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A REASON TO GIVE ME A NEGATIVE RATING or a LOW STAR RATING. Quick note on grading: The Grade (Excellent to Poor, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to P), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise."EXCEPTIONALLY QUIET" is close to noiseless, like a vinyl pressing."VERY QUIET" is an above average quiet record for a given pressing."Quiet" is a record that is a great example with some noise. These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment. Multiple item shipping: I am happy to combine items for shipment in one parcel. Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment. Shipment is usually Media Mail, unless you request another service.
