The letter is typed below:After the destruction of General Hoods Army at Franklin & Nashville Tenn. in which I took part, the 23rd Army Corps was shifted to N. Carolina. Enroute we camped in Camp Stoneman Washington DC for about 3 weeks – during which time I often seen President Lincoln – both in his office and at the Capitol and walking on Pennsylvania Avenue. His sight and appearance was an inspiration to us soldiers – who were then in Washington D.C. for our first time. I enlisted at the age of 15 yrs. at Kokomo Ind. and was in the battle of Missionary Ridge and all the engagements on the Atlanta Campaign in 1864 also at the battle of Kingston N.C. and at the surrender of Gen.
