He was a Union Army colonel during the American Civil War.Probably one of the best, if not the best, book on the James Brothers and their gang, with the information provided by former Missouri Governor Thomas Crittenden. A large section of this book deals with the rounding up of the James Brothers and their gang, and outlawry in Missouri after the Civil War. Adams 150 #37 says, "A large portion of this book is devoted to the lives of the James brothers and the trial of Frank James. Governor Crittenden offered the reward which ultimately led to Jesse's death."
