She did not play the prior year (1953) as she was recovering from surgery for colon cancer. The following year she could not defend her title as she was recovering from back surgery at which time it was discovered that cancer had returned to her sacrum. She wore a colostomy bag throughout the tournament.....JUST AMAZING....
