"Through a unified effort to achieve a context for their expression, they have created a visual unit -- a book of images. Each has selected from his work, and ordered, a series of photographs to form a wordless statement through the direct visual communication of his medium. And though each section stands as a highly individualized unit, they are bound together by a common understanding of the meaning and potentials of the photographic image." - Publisher quote "Walter Chappell, whose finely detailed, impeccably printed photographs of landscapes, natural forms and the human body were known for their mystical intensity,..." - Roberta Smith, NY Times AUG. 12, 2000 Condition: Very Good, with some discoloration to edges and foxing to fore-edges; inside is clean, tight and bright, clearly well maintained by a concerned collector. Additional Information: Walter Landon Chappell (1925-2000) was an American photographer and poet, primarily known for his black and white photography of landscapes, nature, and the human body. He forged his career in black and white photography in a unique journey that aligned his understanding of a deeper reality with a deliberate and precise photographic technique culminating in what he called camera vision. Chappell was a constant presence in American black and white imagery among other noted photographers Minor White, Alfred Stieglitz, and Edward Weston, with whom he studied. Chappell was curator of prints and exhibitions at the George Eastman House in Rochester, New York from 1957 to 1961 and was affiliated with Aperture Magazine founded by Minor White in 1952. Chappell has a significant representation of works in collections at: the Museum of Modern Art (New York, New York); the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House (Rochester, New York); Library of Congress (Washington, D.C.); Museum of Art, Stanford University (Palo Alto, California); Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studio (Culver City, California) among many others. Syl Labrot (1929 - 1977) worked in many aspects of photography and printmaking including a collaboration with Walter Chappell and Nathan Lyons, that produced the book 'Under the Sun' in 1960. He had a long-standing concern with the color photographic print "as a space quite separate from both the reality reproduced by the camera and the graphic forces of the print, the print transcends its parts, yet is deeply linked to them". Working with offset allowed him to reconstruct and redefine his own evidence, much as if he were his own archaeologist. His photographs, prints and paintings were widely exhibited and collected during his lifetime. Nathan Lyons (1930 – 2016) was an American photographer, curator, and educator. He exhibited his photographs from 1956 onwards, produced books of his own and edited those of others. Lyons was also a curator of photography and an associate director at the George Eastman House in Rochester, New York and, in 1969, founded the independent Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, which established a course of study relating to the history and practice of the photographic art form and curatorial studies specifically pertaining to the medium of photography. In 2000 Lyons received the International Center of Photography's Infinity Award for Lifetime Achievement in photography. Cavemodern was founded in 2005 as a home for important "modern" books and works on paper. "Cave" meant a home for both the tangible touch of beautiful objects and a cozy virtual den for armchair exploration. "Modern" starts with the art and literature that went beyond realistic depictions to expressive use of color, non-traditional materials, and new techniques and mediums. Our focus has evolved to be on important pieces by cultural innovators that take their work in new, unexpected, and modern directions.
