19th C. Civil War Northwest Coast Indian Agent Cpt. George D. Hill Document Box

Description: I found this large awesome 19th century Geo. D. Hill USA, Document Box about 20 years ago at an antique store in Fife Washington on the border of King County. This is in the same region that CPT George Dana Braadman Hill was an Native American Northwest Coast Indian Agent and according to the history books he was a wealthy land owner and this traveling lock box boldly displaying his name and proudly advertising he's of the USA, lettered all in large gold paint and would have been appropriate for a man such as described below. The box is made of heavy gauge steel, it measures 15" X 10" X 10", painted black and gold with a large sturdy brass handle, lock, riveted hinges, finely rolled edges and a high raised pop top lid, it has no key, there may be more written surprises inside! As seen in the pictures there's some chips & scratches but there's no flaking, the paint is tight, just as I found it so many years ago...I've displayed this in my home for many years, it's a really nice piece but I've got some college to pay for coming up. Although I can't say with all certainty that this was his box I did a great deal of research and I found that he also had 4 children still living in Seattle until 1956 and I imagine some grand & great grandchildren that may have let this go, and I could find no other George D. HILL in or near Washington in any obituaries including an Ancestry.website and "Find A Grave". There's also plenty of more information online about his life, duties and his care for the Salish Indians.He's buried at Lake View Cemetary...In 1872, the Seattle Masonic Cemetery was incorporated. Located atop Capitol Hill, one of the renowned "Seven Hills of Seattle", the cemetery offered unbroken vistas of Lake Washington and the Cascade Mountains to the east and Lake Washington and the Olympic Mountains to the west. The cemetery name was officially changed to Lake View Cemetery in 1890.George D. Hill was born in Ohio and raised on a farm in Michigan. He enlisted in the U.S. Army as a musician in 1861 but soon was serving in the regular army and promoted to Lieutenant. He lost his left arm in 1865 due to a battle wound sustained at Appomattox. Hill was very proud of his Civil War service and wore his empty sleeve as a badge of honor.After the war, Hill enlisted in the peacetime army. He was stationed at Plattsburg, New York, and was involved with recruiting. In 1869 Hill was sent to Washington Territory to investigate Indian affairs at Neah Bay and Tulalip. He was soon appointed Indian agent at Tulalip and retired from the regular army with the rank of captain. Hill served at the Tulalip Agency until 1871. He later served as "acting" Indian agent at the Neah Bay Agency from September 1877 until 1878.In March 1872, Hill married Ellen K. Kellogg. They had two sons and two daughters.Hill became a recognized leader of the Republican Party in King County and Washington Territory. He was elected and reelected as treasurer of King County from 1874 until 1887 and was credited with holding the party together at times. Hill retired from public life in 1887 amid rumored charges of embezzlement. The charges were never substantiated and never brought to court.Hill and his wife amassed a substantial amount of property. During the years following his retirement and his wife's death (also in 1887), Hill devoted his time to managing his wife's estate and his own property interests.On December 4, 1890, Hill fell from the gangplank as he attempted to board a steamer and drowned. He was about 50 years old.This would make a fine addition to your Pre-Reservation Native American Indian, Northwest Coast Native, Indian Wars, Civil War Documented Historical Figure Collection.
