Description: 957 Postcard – Red Cloud, Oglala Sioux Chief 1880 Photo – NEW RED CLOUD, “Mahpiya Luta,” Oglala Sioux Chief (1822-1909) Red Cloud became the most successful war leader of the Sioux and Cheyenne during the 1860’s and their campaign to close the Bozeman Trail, a route for emigrants traveling to the Montana gold fields that passed directly through hunting grounds promised to the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapahoe. When more than two hundred peaceful Cheyenne were murdered during the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864, the Native Americans began attacking whites all across the Plains. The government then built a series of forts along the Bozeman trail; the largest being Fort Phil Kearney. Known as Red Cloud's War, Red Cloud and Crazy Horse focused their attacks on Fort Kearney. On the bitterly cold morning in 1866, about 2,000 Natives concealed themselves along the road just north of Fort Phil Kearney. Crazy Horse and a small band made a diversionary attack on a party of woodcutters from the fort, and Colonel Fetterman went to their aid with a company of 80 troopers. Crazy Horse and 10 decoy warriors fled, leading the soldiers into an ambush. The soldiers were wiped out in a massive attack when some 40,000 arrows rained down on the troopers. None survived. With 81 fatalities, the Fetterman Massacre was the army’s worst defeat in the west until the Battle of Little Bighorn (Greasy Grass) in 1876. Further attacks forced the army to abandoned the forts along the trail. It was one of only a handful of clear Native American victories in the Plains Indian Wars. Photograph by Charles M.
