Antique Black Walnut Brass Bound American Large Lap Desk, C 1830

Description: This antique lap desk is a true gem for any collector of American antiques. Crafted in the early 19th century, it features a beautiful combination of veneered black Walnut wood over birch, with ebonized edges and corners, wide Brass binding and brass escutcheon with working lock and key. Inside, it retains its original embossed leather and ebonized interior above compartments for papers etc. To the front of the Interior there is a removable Pen Tray with storage below and three spaces which would have held Inkwells on either side. While there is expected wear and some evidence of minor repair, this piece is in remarkable condition and has a beautiful patina. Measuring approximately 16 inches in width and 9.25 inches in depth, and sitting 6.5 inches tall this large lap desk is still functional and will also make an impressive display piece. The item(s) are antique and sold as is/as found. The item(s) may show wear, fading, scratches, repairs, restoration, original imperfections and/or damage from normal use. In particular, I note wear and evidence of past repair, as shown in photos. Additionally, the interior leather has split and can no longer support as a hinge for the upper compartment. Previous repair used a book binding tape to underside as shown in photo. Examine photos carefully as they are part of the description. Imperfections were factored into pricing. No returns or refunds.
