Description: I think this basket is remarkable. I don’t know who this incredible woman was but she was a master. I have driven around the Washington peninsula. I have been in Neah Bay Area. It is a harsh environment. Lots of weather. Out comes this precious basket. Amazing. I’m going to get geeky now so you can skip this part if you want. This basket dates from the first quarter of the 20th century. It’s design fits with what the Makah, Nootka, and Haida basket style. This basket maker was highly skilled and possibly an elder. Very few cedar baskets made in the last 30-40 years make a plain checker work bottom. This twill bottom is a work of art. Her technique is pass the bark weft over two cedar warp elements. These elements continue up the to make the side warp. Larger pieces of cedar splint act like weft in a 2:1 passing. The rarity here is the the border. The cedar warps have been split in fourths and bent to create bulk. Sweet grass tightly wraps the material around. Just a fascinating piece. Material: Split Cedar or Black hemlock, sweet. grasses. Dimensions: 8 1/4 inches long by 6 3/4 inches wide by 5 1/4 inches high Condition: Very Good. There are some age related conditions. Some light fraying on border. Some sweet grass has worn. A very slender wire is wrapped into the border. These people are intimate with the sea. In the early 20th century, when Hunting whale their tools certainly could have included fishing wire or material for their harpoons. So they had access to this material.
