Inscription on title page reads, “To my friend the great sculptor Jewel in remembrance of the School of Paris/ New York Arbitblatas”. Blatas and Jacque Lipchitz were close friends and this book was obtained in Hastings-On-Hudson where Lipchitz lived. The “Sculptor Jewel” in the inscription may be a reference to Lipchitz and the book most likely came from the Lipchitz estate. Blatas had a studio in Manhattan, a half hour away by train, and the artists saw each other often. Arbit Blatas (1908-1999) was born a Russian Jew in Kaunas, Lithuania in 1908. His birth name was Nicolai Arbitblatas. He began painting at a young age and had his first exhibition at the age of 14. Blatas arrived in Paris at the peak of the School of Paris whose members included Picasso, Cocteau, Matisse, Leger, Braques, Lipchitz and others. Blatas was the youngest acknowledged member and painted and/or sculpted all of these giants of the Paris art world over some thirty years. Blatas was honored with numerous awards during his lifetime including a Certificate of Appreciation from New York City Mayor Ed Koch; the gold medal "Venezia Riconoscente" from the City of Venice and the Medaille de Vermeil of the City of Paris. He was named a Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur by the French Government for his contribution to French art.
