A descriptive panel is attached to the reverse written and signed in the artist’s hand reading “Title: “Thinking Bull” The use of this painting in any sort of religious ceremony is forbidden without prior consent of the shaman. Barry Phillips”. At the end of the passage “the shaman” has been underlined. A white title card has also been attached to the reverse reading “Thinking Bull” 21x17 Barry Phillips - watercolor”. The title card has been stamped “GEORGE S HAWN”. The glazed frame measures 21 1/8" in width and 17 1/8” in height with the image measuring 13" in width and 9 1/2” in height. Edwin Barry Phillips, Jr. (1939-2020)Barry Phillips the Elder Artist and educator, Barry Phillips the Elder (Edwin Barry Phillips, Jr.) was born in Ardmore, OK. The family moved to Odessa in 1948 and Barry was a 1957 graduate of Odessa High School where he was named “Most Artistic” by his senior class. Barry began his college education at Odessa College and then attended the Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles, CA before completing a master’s degree in art education at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. Professor Phillips began his teaching career at Howard Payne University in Brownwood, TX before returning to west Texas in 1970 to become chair of the Odessa College Art Department. Early in his career, he served as a founding member and president of the Texas Association of Schools of Art. In the 1980’s he founded BRAG Publications, a non-profit exhibition space for contemporary art. During this time, he began working on his signature Odin’s Odysseys series of mixed media sculptures featuring welded wire fantasy flying machines. His award winning artwork has been exhibited in over 100 shows nationwide and is included in numerous public and private collections. In 2002, Phillips was honored by the Heritage of Odessa Foundation as Community Statesman for the Arts. He retired from teaching at Odessa College in 2014 after 44 years of service.In 2018 Odessa College honored Phillips with the dedication of the Phillips Goff Gallery in tribute to Barry Phillips, Jr., professor of fine arts, and Steve Goff, professor of photography. Provenance George Sherman Hawn (1929-2022) George S. Hawn was born in Beeville, Texas to Richard and Dorothy Hawn on August 3, 1929 and was the youngest of four brothers, William, Dean, and John. An avid flier, he earned his pilot’s license at 16 before he earned his driver’s license, flying himself to St. John’s Military Academy in Delafield, Wisconsin where he graduated before earning a degree from the University of Houston. After marrying Gippie Denison Walling (Tiny) in 1950, the couple settled in Corpus Christi and Port Aransas,Texas where they raised four children. George furthered his parent’s work in oil and gas exploration and continued developing the Roche and Lambert oil fields as a partner of the Hewit & Dougherty Oil Company in Refugio, Texas. In the 1950’s, he, along with his brothers William and John, started Hawn Brothers Company. George was also a very successful real estate developer and was a founder of American Bank in 1970 in Corpus Christi, Texas. He served as a member of the Board of Regents for the University of Houston and worked tirelessly on the boards of a number of community-based charitable organizations and city boards.
