Description: G.I. Gurdjieff was a spiritual teacher at the turn of the last century, until his death in the late 1940s. He was a complicated and enigmatic figure who taught that people cannot perceive reality in their current condition because they are not conscious of themselves, but rather live in a state of a hypnotic "waking sleep". "Man lives his life in sleep, and in sleep he dies." Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson by G.I. Gurdjieff was published in three paperback volumes in 1973 by E.F. Dutton. The slipcase is solid, with minor scuffs and dings to the front edge, some foxing, and print bleed on the set's description. Of the three volumes themselves, Book One has a crease on the cover, otherwise the books appear unread, with only slight wear and discoloring, and light scuffing on the spine. This is an important work made by a difficult man, by all accounts. He was provocative and confrontational. This is the sort of work that should have a place for it in any comprehensive library.
