STRAP DROP: 16" About the Bag Beautiful, vintage, Bonwit Teller handbag, made in Italy with glossy alligator skin and plain leather trim. The interior pockets of the bag are lined with soft black leather. The bag has three pockets. There is a central pocket which is zipped which also contains a side zipped pocket with the words, "Made in Italy for Bonwit Teller," stamped on it. There are two additional pockets, one on either side of the center pocket. Both these pockets have brass snap closures. The bag is in excellent condition except for a strip of leather at the top of the ceter zipped pocket - on both sides just under where the zip closes - see pictures 11 and 12 (each pix shows you one side of the center opening just under the zip closure). I believe this could be fixed by a good cobbler. There is no visible wear on the outer corner edges of the bag, nor on the strap or skin. Bonwit Teller Alligator skin handbags in condition not as good as this one sell for upwards of $1000. About Bonwit Teller & Co. Bonwit Teller & Co. was a classy, luxury department store in New York City founded by Paul Bonwit in 1895 at Sixth Avenue and 18th Street, and later a chain of department stores. Beginning in the 1960s, a series of corporate takeovers changed the face of retailing. Bonwit’s was sold several times, and it lost the luster that Bergdorf, in particular, was able to retain. Although some ancillary stores survived until 2000, Bonwit Teller closed its store at Fifth and 56th in 1979.
