Description: Heyward, DuBose - Porgy - George H Doran: New York, 1925 - First Edition / First Printing / First Issue Binding - Publisher’s device, a small seal with “GHD”, present on the copyright page as required in order to denote the first printing of the first edition. First issue binding in black. Summertime, an' the livin' is easy / Fish are jumpin' an' the cotton is high. / Oh, yo' daddy's rich and yo' ma is good-lookin’ / So hush, little baby, don' you cry. The book has rubbing, sunning to the spine, spots of fraying, and general edge and shelf wear. The boards remain mostly straight, the binding is still square and is not cracked or broken, and internally this copy is rather clean with no writing or other markings. All together a still presentable and acceptable example of a rather uncommon book. While not a true issue point it is worth mentioning that this copy is in the correct black cloth stamped in gold— the binding changes in later printings to orange and mauve. This is the quintessential novel of Charleston, and the south as a whole, from the first half of the last century. First adapted by Heyward’s wife for the stage in 1927 then as the beloved musical Porgy and Bess with music by Gershwin in 1935. Additionally the basis for multiple film adaptations but the best being the version from 1959 which starred Sidney Poitier and Dorothy Dandridge as Porgy and Bess and Sammy Davis Jr as Sportin’ Life.
