Description: Exquisite Laguna Pottery (closely related to Acoma Pottery), Vintage, Signed R. Reana Well-made, beautifully executed geometric design, typical of pottery from Laguna and Acoma Villages, in white with black design, in excellent used condition, no flaws. Such pottery is typically constructed by hand coiling the clay, then smoothing the pot into its final shape, either by hand or using wooden scrapers. The pot is then set aside and allowed to dry. Once “bone dry” the pots are low fired, then glazed, with decoration added, before a second firing, In which the glaze becomes liquid, and adheres to become fused to the pot. Note: some very fine Acoma potters prefer to use molds to make their pottery, and as has been pointed out to me, the foot of this pot suggests it was molded. It is still an exceptional value at the asking price. See www.pueblodirect.com to get an idea of the current market and prices for SW Pueblo pottery. This is a vintage piece, more than thirty years old, which should increase its value, yet the asking price is low, compared to new pots of similar size and complexity at current market prices. Dimensions: 5 1/2” tall. Bottom rim 3”, top opening rim 5 1/2” across. Signed by R. Reana, Laguna, NM This potter has made other pots I’ve seen for sale. While traditionally women were the potters, now both men and women in the pueblos make pottery. Usually I ship within one or two days, after you make a purchase.
