Not a regular lithograph but hand-colored in with unique accents. The pochoir was executed under Henri Matisse's authorization and was hand-colored in Paris by Chroniques du Jour (one of his publishers) making each piece unique and one of a kind. No two were ever alike! This is one of the few early color prints in Henri Mattisse's print oeuvre. Color pochoir (hand-painted in stencil print) after the original Matisse painting. From the Gualtieri Di San Lazzaro edition of 200 pieces, signed in the plate bottom right, not hand signed. Purchased at the Showplace Art & Antiques Market on W 25th Street in New York back in 1998. I have kept it in a climate controlled storage for the last +20 years. In overall excellent condition. Colors very vibrant and not faded as it has not been exposed to sunlight before. Guaranteed authentic original pochoir from 1929. Frame is 20 years old and shows some wear and tear. Feel free to show it your expert in order to test them on their knowledge of the Pochoir. Medium Pochoir (French: “stencil”), as distinguished from ordinary stenciling, is a highly refined technique of making fine limited editions of lithographic stencil prints after which they are hand-painted and colored in. These pochoirs are extremely rare as the edition size was always limited due to the work involved. It was a very labor intensive and expensive technique, which produced an image that is often indistinguishable from the artist's hand painted original. The black, or key line, of each print is pulled on a lithographic press. The image is then cut into a stencil made from a fine sheet of metal and gouache or watercolor is applied by hand using a variety of different brushes. A separate stencil is required for each color, sometimes up to twenty being used. Condition Excellent condition. Hand applied watercolor pain is fresh and vibrant. Never exposed to sunlight before. Pale bleed-through staining to verso, small not noticeable scuff upper part image near top as pictured. Minor yellowing of paper consistent with age. Frame has minor wear and tear.
