Description: This is an Estate Fresh 19th Century Sampler from a local Estate home. Its an INTERESTING 1840 19th Cent. MOTIF & ALPHABET SAMPLER signed REBECCA McCOY and DATED JULY 4, 1840 - HATFIELFs TIE? This Sampler is an Early to mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Rebecca McCoy aged 10 I believe. This sampler is quite nice with fine quality stitch work throughout. The Sampler is stitched with five rows of alphabet letters and numbers, each underlined with a different example of border pattern. There are a few stitched trees, a home and what might have been a wire basket including lower upper and Large case Letters. So... there is a slim possibility that this is the Rebecca McCoy of the Hatfield’s and McCoy Clan. The dates and times seem to match up, her parents married in 1821. 9 children at 1 a year, with her being the 8th child could maker her around 9 to 11 when this Sampler was done. It is not unlike many of the McCoy clan families to have lots of children, one of the Benjamin’s, younger than Rebecca, had 14 kids after having 3 with his previous wife. That man’s father had even more kids, 15 I believe. A Rebecca McCoy’s Father was BENJAMIN THOMAS McCOY was born in 1798, in Virginia. He married Melia Maynard on April 17, 1821, in Floyd Co., Ky. They had the following children 9 children: William, Lockey, Samuel, Elijah, Elizabeth, Nancy, Leannah, Rebecca & John. So the time table is pretty close as that would be the age kids were doing samplers. A possibility. This information gleened from the McCoy Family Genealogy, found online. It comes in very nice condition as described above so buy it as you see it in my photos, I am no expert on Samplers. It was framed as you see it when I bought it and looks like it might be sewn tacked to the backer board but not sure. Framed the piece is 14.5"x22" wide. The Linen Sampler is 10"x17.25" wide.
