The author of the letter, Abdülkerim Nadir Pasha (1807-1883), a great soldier of the Ottoman Empire, was then governor of Thessaloniki. He recommends Léon Heuzey to the moudir [prefect or director] of the city of Durazzo, located in present-day Albania. The French archaeologist is indeed back in Macedonia for a second mission, with the architect Honoré Daumet (1826-1911), at the request of Napoleon III. The emperor wishes to gather preparatory information for his history of Julius Caesar, and is particularly interested in the battlefields of the latter in the East, in particular that of Pharsalus. The mission is carried out in difficult conditions and must be shortened. It nevertheless brought to light the main ancient sites of a region that was little explored at the time and enriched the Louvre museum with a few objects. The fruit of the work of Heuzey and Daumet, mentioned in this letter of recommendation, was published in 1876 under the title Archaeological Mission of Macedonia: excavations and research carried out in this region and in the adjacent parts of Thrace, Thessaly and 'Epirus in the year 1861 by order of His Majesty the Emperor Napoleon III. Léon Heuzey is thus a pioneer in the discovery of ancient Macedonia. In 1870, he was appointed curator of the department of Greek and Roman antiquities at the Louvre and in 1881, first curator of the department of oriental antiquities.. - "To the illustrious and capable Bey, Mudir de Durazzo / Very illustrious Bey, / Mr. Léon Heuzey, subject of the French government, has just arrived in these regions provided with a superior order and a firman, in order to research and study on the same places, historical materials to be used to specify certain chronological facts which will be contained in a work which one currently composes on the history of ancient Romans. / This character, who has already traveled through a few localities, now undertakes to visit these surroundings. / As Mr. Léon Heuzey is of a high and distinguished rank, you are requested by this affectionate note, to have for him all the desirable consideration and to provide him with all the facilities that will be necessary for him”.
