Description: Limoges Haviland & Co Plate 8 5/8" 1894-1931 Apples & Leaf Sprays w/Gold & Black Exquisite Decorative 8 5/8" PLATE, Smooth RIM w/Gold Trim & Geometric Scrollwork, Pink APPLES w/GREEN LEAVES, circa 1894-1931 DESCRIPTION: The plate was skillfully hand decorated by a talented artist. The pink apples nestled in their green leaves are in 6 large sprays across the plate. In addition, there are small pink roses. These roses are repeated in the 5 cartouches bounded by the leaf garlands between the apple sprays. The mold is smooth rimmed and trimmed in a wide band of gold. Next to the gold band is a geometric scrollwork band consisting of yellow squares and black dots. The overall quality of the design is quite professional and beautiful to behold. CONDITION: The condition of this decorative plate is superb. We can find no defects or damage. The gold on the rim band does show very minor, shallow scratches. There is no wear to the colors. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, other scratches or hairlines. Please refer to the photos to see how classically beautiful this plate is. DIMENSIONS: The plate has a diameter of 8 5/8” with a height of 1". HISTORY/MARKS: The American-born David Haviland settled in Limoges, France in 1842 operating a porcelain exporting business to the USA. He purchased white ware from various factories and shipped it to his New York decorating studio. In 1847, he established a decorating studio in Limoges. He started producing porcelain in Limoges in 1865 and decorating it on site. His sons, Charles Edward and Theodore, continued the prosperous business after David’s death in 1879. Theodore left to establish his own firm in 1892. Charles Edward continued Haviland & Co. until his death in 1921. It bankrupt under his son’s leadership in 1930 and the molds were sold in 1931. In 1941, Theodore’s son, William, was able to obtain the rights to the old Haviland & Co. marks and molds and the company was reorganized as Haviland & Co. William retired in 1957 and the company was carried on by his sons. When the sons retired in 1972, management of the company was turned over to the Cerabati Group under the name of Haviland SA. The company remains in business today. The underglaze mark (in green) on this is mark #12 (Mary Frank Gaston’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition) which was used from 1894-1931. It also has the red decorator’s mark #13 used 1876-1878 & 1889-1931; so time period is 1894-1931. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description.
