Description: Sailboat portrait lithograph by Jack Spurling192532 x 28 cm with frame19 x 13.5 cm without the frameJohn Robert Charles Spurling (1870 – 1933) was an English painter known for his nautical themes, particularly sailing ships of the 19th and 20th centuries.HistorySpurling was born December 12, 1870. He was the son of an importer and grew up near the London docks, where he learned to draw as a hobby. At the age of 16, he went to sea for the first time as an apprentice aboard Astoria . His life nearly ended when he fell from the upper main topsail yard onto the deck. Instead, he spent six months in a Singapore hospital. He earned his second mate's license after a few years on board one of Devitt & Moore's sailing training ships, and around the same time he learned the art of watercolor painting and quickly received orders from other sailors. He finished his life at sea as a sailor on the Blue Anchor steam line. Spurling's second love was the stage and a promising career as an actor, but success as a painter came: in 1921 he met Frederick Arthur Hook (d. 1935), editor of The Blue Peter : The Magazine of Sea Travel, Price 1/- , a magazine for sailing enthusiasts. Hook purchased much of Spurling's portfolio of work and asked him to provide illustrations for the covers of his magazine, the first being that of Mars 1923. Spurling died on May 31, 1933.Spurling was born December 12, 1870. He was the son of an importer and grew up near the London docks, where he learned to draw as a hobby.
