Description: This is a rare "The Ray" program from the Tuesday, January 3rd, 1882 performance of Henry Mapleson's Her Majesty's Opera Company in the GEORGES BIZET opera "CARMEN" at the Boston Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts. ("Carmen" had it's World Premiere performance on March 3rd, 1875 at the Opera Comique in Paris. The London premiere with MINNIE HAUK in the title role, was presented at Her Majesty's Theatre on June 17th, 1878. It would be two years after this Boston engagement that New York's Metropolitan Opera would first stage the opera on January 9th, 1884.) ..... The opera starred Mlle. MINNIE HAWK in the role that she would be most associated with for the remainder of her career and Signor ITALO CAMPANINI as "Don Jose". The remaining cast included Signor DEL PUENTE, Signor RINALDINI, Signor CORSINI, Signor MONTI, Signor BIELETTO, Mlle. DOTTI, Mlle. VALERGA and Mlle. KALAS with Signor ARDITI conducting ..... The front cover promotes the remaining operas to be presented that week by Henry Mapleson's Her Majesty's Opera Company beginning with Charles Gounod's "FAUST" on Wednesday, January 4th, 1882 with Signor CAMPANINI in the title role and Mlle. PAOLINA ROSSINI as "Margherita". On Thursday evening, January 5th, 1882, the company presented Mozart's "IL FLAUTO MAGICO" ("The Magic Flute") with Mlle. MINNIE HAUK in role of "Pamina". On Friday evening, January 6th, 1882, the company presented Friedrich von Flotow's "MARTA" ("Martha") with Mlle. EMMA JUCH in the title role. On Saturday afternoon, January 7th, 1882, the company presented Richard Wagner's "LOHENGRIN" starring Mlle. MINNIE HAWK and Signor ITALO CAMPANINI and on Saturday evening, January 7th, 1882, the company presented Verdi's "IL TROVATORE" ("The Troubadour") ..... PROGRAM DETAILS: The eight page program measures 9 1/2" X 12" inches and includes partial production credits, list of the members of the operas, schedule of upcoming engagements and wonderful vintage advertising, but no photos or bios ..... CONDITION: (Please Note!) There are a number of edge tears, tiny punctures in the front cover at the center fold, a vertical tear in the middle, creasing along the seam and moderate edge wear. Despite these flaws, this rare program will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any opera aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
