Reverse in the center - against the background of the heraldic shield there is an image of a bull's head, in a circle there are inscriptions: at the top - BULL, below - ZHIVELINY ON THE COAT OF ARMS OF GARAD BELARUS The generally recognized symbol of our country is the bison. We have already written about his difficult fate and vague future. It's time to talk about other animals that are strongly associated with Belarus. Moreover, the choice often seems more than unexpected. Perhaps the first place should be given to Slonim. Contrary to expectations, you will not see the largest land animal on the coat of arms of this regional center, since elephants have nothing to do with it (the name of the city comes from the ancient Slavic word “uslona,” which means “barrier,” and reflects the history of its origins as a fortified settlement). The coat of arms of Slonim is decorated with the image of a lion holding a “fox” in its paw - this is the name of the arrow with two crossbars that served as the coat of arms of the Sapega family. Here's a heraldic vinaigrette. The coat of arms of Mozyr depicts an eagle, and it looks no less exotic. But only at first glance: after all, this bird is also found in Belarus. For example, golden eagles live in large raised swamps, and there is a dwarf eagle, which is not much larger in size than the well-known hooded crow. From the point of view of ornithology, 6 species of birds living on the territory of Belarus can be called an eagle, but which one has become the symbol of Mozyr will apparently remain a mystery. It is no less difficult to trace the pedigree of the snake that adorns the coat of arms of Pruzhany. From a historical point of view, there are no special mysteries here: Bona Sforza, who owned Pruzhany, in 1560 gave him the family coat of arms of her mother, who came from the family of the Dukes of Milan. Gradually, the strange blue snake began to be associated with the more familiar snake. Not the least role in this was played by the image of a golden crown, which corresponds to two yellow dots on the head of a real snake (in Belarusian folklore he is considered the king of snakes). Quite expectedly, a bear is included on the coat of arms of Smorgon. This is a reminder of the famous academy that operated on the territory of the town in the 17th–19th centuries. Its “graduates,” who were caught in the surrounding forests, then gave performances at fairs throughout Europe, reaching all the way to France. It must be said that the training methods used today would clearly qualify as cruelty to animals: in order to teach young bears to “dance” to music, they put special bast shoes on them, and then heated the floor while simultaneously hitting a tambourine. The animals developed a conditioned reflex, thanks to which, at the sound of music, they stood on their hind legs and began to stomp on the spot. The residents of Volkovysk also did not become original. Since the 16th century, the city’s coat of arms has featured an image of a gray predator. If initially it was only his head, today you can see the whole animal. It is clear that the choice was inspired by the name of the city, which in turn comes from the Volkovyya River flowing in these places. It can be assumed that once upon a time the howling of wolves was indeed an integral part of everyday life here. These animals have not disappeared from the territory of Belarus even today, but have become much more careful, since since Soviet times they have been considered an “undesirable species” and are subject to shooting, despite the protests of many scientists. Even non-specialists can easily understand that the coat of arms of Grodno features a deer. However, not everything is so simple: the image of a cross between the antlers suggests that this is Hubert’s deer (that was the name of the Catholic saint who lived in the 8th century and decided to become a clergyman precisely after meeting such an unusual animal). Saint Hubert is considered the patron saint of hunters, of whom there were many among the inhabitants of Grodno. This is not surprising, since in 1540, when the city was granted a coat of arms, it was surrounded by dense forests with many ungulates, including red deer. Only in the 20th century did this species disappear from the territory of Belarus due to poaching. Recently, attempts have been made to restore its numbers. The current coat of arms of Gomel was inherited from Novaya Belitsa only in 1855, when Ivan Paskevich moved the administrative center to it. The symbol of the city is the lynx - the only wild cat that lives on the territory of Belarus today. It is in the Polesie Radiation Reserve, located nearby, that today one of the largest lynx populations in the country is concentrated. Animals and birds of prey are widely used in European heraldry, so it is difficult to surprise anyone with their image - unlike the two doves that can be seen on the coat of arms of Drogichin. At one time it was developed by the chief architect of the district V.G. Mikhnyuk. In this case, the birds do not symbolize peace, as one might think, but the holiday of the Presentation of the Lord (a church named in his honor existed in Drogichin until the twentieth century). So rock pigeons, which long ago moved to cities from seaside cliffs and thanks to this gradually spread throughout Europe, also left their mark on Belarusian heraldry - albeit a very recent one.
