Description: Here is a fascinating drawing the book of revelation, death riding a pale horse. This is a print study for illustrations in a bible story book. It is unknown how the final study actually looked, but I would imagine that it was largely like this. I say that because there was an unwritten competition among artists at this time to depict the book of revelation as hideously as can be to deter as much bad behavior as possible. I personally think that this is a very well done depiction of death and his horse. They are very stylistic and would probably be an attractive piece for a work of the period. It is very large at 26 x 37 cm. The sheet and image are both in excellent condition although a bit of surface dirt could be attended to. The inscription is that of Carlo Maratta although it could just as easily be a member of his studio and the collector mark is the initials of William Young Ottley, an early 19thC printmaker who was probably in process of turning this into a print. Altogether a wonderful work of art and its large size makes its composition stand out even more. Great work!!!!
