This has to be the CRUDEST, the CLEANEST, the PRISTINEIST antique SANFORD'S INK well that we've ever seen! This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE Blown Glass ink bottle with a cork top, dating well over a century old. Base of bottle embossed: "SANFORD'S". Condition: Ink well is in PRISTINE SPARKLING CLEAN condition. It looks like the day it came out of the factory it is in such shiny clean condition. It is also SUPER CRUDE, all of the lines and fizzures you see on and around the base in the pictures, all of those are BUBBLES, MOLDED lines, natural INDENTIONS of the blown glass as this bottle has NO cracks, chips, dings, damage, etc. Age: An ORIGINAL ANTIQUE blown-glass (ABM) bottle with a cork-top, ca early 1900's. This old SANFORD'S INK well has got to be one of the crudest blown glass ink wells that we've seen in a long time. Again, all of the lines and fizzures you see on and around the base in the pictures, are BUBBLES, MOLDED lines, natural INDENTIONS of the blown glass, the bottle has NO damage. Antique ink wells come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and colors that run from clear to aqua to amber to cobalt blue. A PRISTINE PURPLE one like this really sets off a string of colored ones, and compliments the whole line up. You hear about old bottles turning purple ... the purple color is the result of having manganese in the glass. Manganese is a mineral, a rock, that was mined, crushed, and pulverized into a powder, then added to vats of molten liquid glass, and acted as a decolorizing agent to turn the natural aqua-tinted glass into a pure crystal clear colorless glass. But when exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, it triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese oxidizes and turns a wonderful amethyst color. This bottle was passed through some UV rays that hastened the time it took to turn purple. A bottle has to be old enough to turn this purple color as, with few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1915 has manganese in it and will turn sun-colored-amethyst. Not only does this deep purple/amethyst color make this a great looking bottle but it also authenticates it as being truly antique. Antique ink wells were often used up, refilled, knocked over, refilled, and used until they broke, then thrown away so they are often very 'used' looking when you find them.
