Description: A rare gem, this pre-owned 1904 First Edition set of Henry Smith Williams’ (Ed.) “The Historian’s History of the World” spans 25 volumes, bound in white vellum and adorned with the original crimson dust jackets. This vast narrative, detailing “the rise and development of nations as recorded by over two thousand of the great writers of all ages,” stands as a testament to the grand encyclopedic tomes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. *Accompanying the set—a meticulously preserved Bill of Sale, issued on February 25, 1905, by The Outlook Company, New York, and an informational sheet included with Volume 25 (printed in 1905), explaining the intricacies of the set’s inaugural printing and indexing. These artifacts, imbued with rich provenance, offer a unique and captivating addition to the complete collection.* Despite the passage of time, this set maintains a splendid allure. Beyond the specific notes on its condition, the set—to include the dust jackets—is in overall very good condition and ready for display with or without the dust jackets. The vellum covers, each bearing an embossed design reflecting the volume’s specific theme, reveal only faint traces of wear and discoloration. The volumes are tightly bound with no broken hinges. At approximately 600 leaves per volume, the text blocks have top-edge gilt, are rough/trimmed at the tail- and fore-edges, and incorporate numerous in-text illustrations, plates, and vibrant color maps, all impeccably preserved—no foxing noted. Frontispieces, guarded by protective tissue, grace each volume. While generally in very good condition given its size and age, there are some specific notes on condition: Volume 1–the dust jacket has some minor discoloration, and there is fore-edge chipping on the two rear free endpapers; the preceding colored map leaf, however, is in fine condition. Volume 25 (Index)—this volume shows signs of water damage, touching the upper front board/spine (w/ red bleed through from the dust jacket), upper front of the dust jacket, and initial leaves through viii, with slight discoloration on following leaf. Other than the discoloration, the binding is tight, the top-edge gilt preserved, and the remaining text block, clean. Some dust jackets show white print loss on the imprinted labeling (most notably on Volumes VII, XII, XVI) as well as areas of normal light wear around the edges. Additionally, each volume carries a small yellow square, marking the remnants of a removed book plate, visible on the front free endpaper. Please take a look at the photos for more detail. As it is a large set, multiple boxes will be required for shipping. Each volume measures 10.5 in x 7.5 in x 2.5 in. Original 1905 Bill of Sale & Informational sheet will be in separate archival sheet protector placed into Volume 1. Only ships to U.S. contiguous 48 States.
