Thick, high quality plastic covers the print. Signed and framed by artist # 116 of 170 Richard Hunt is from the Kwagiulth Band of the Kwakiutl people. Although born in Alert Bay, he spent most of his formative years in Victoria, where he absorbed traditional Kwakiutl culture through his family's involvement in totem carving projects at the British Columbia Provincial Museum. These projects were directed by his grandfather, the late Mungo Martin. Richard is today among the most celebrated of the contemporary Northwest Coast artists. He was the first Northwest Coast artist to be elected to the Order of British Columbia (in 1991). In 1994 he was elected to the Order of Canada, which is the most prestigious national honor for service to Canada. In 2004 he received Canada's highest arts award when he was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts. He has also been honored for his many contributions to the city of Victoria, including an Honorary Doctorate degree from the University of Victoria, the Honorary Citizen Award in 2001, and the Golden Jubilee Medal from H.M. Queen Elizabeth for outstanding service to his country. In this design, Richard Hunt has depicted his version of a Kwa-gulth Frog. Seen from above, the frog's characteristics are typically a large mouth with thick lips and legs with toed feet in a flexed position. Frogs are represented in a number of Native myths and are often associated with coppers, an important symbol of wealth in Native culture. They are also capable of transforming into human form. Richard has captured his version of a Kwa-gulth Frog in his own particular style and a slightly humorous quality is evident. This silkscreen print, titled "Kwa-gulth Frog" by Richard Hunt was published in August 1980. It is a limited edition consisting of 170 signed and numbered copies and this print is 60/170, 17 Artist's Proofs, and 1 Printer's Proof. Paper: Arches Cover White. Colors: Red, green and black.
