Description: SIGNED 1960 FIRST EDITION SAN FRANCISCO'S GOLDEN ERAA Picture Story of San Francisco Before the Fireby Lucius Beebe & Charles CleggHowell-North, Berkeley, California, 1960. First Edition. Signed by both Authors on front free endpaper. Very good hardcover, in very good dustjacket in archival mylar wrapper. Tight binding, solid spine, clean unmarked text. Illustrated, 4to, index 255 pages, illustrated endpapers. Another nice book by Lucius Beebe and Charles Clegg that focuses on the beginning's of San Francisco (Yerba Buena) and follows the city's history up to the time just before the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. Published in 1960 by Howell-North Books of Berkeley, California this book is 255 pages with 325 illustrations and printed on heavy dull paper with excellent quality half-tones. Of the 325 illustrations about half are early engravings and the rest are well selected photographs. There are many rare photographs in this volume that I have not seen in the many other books about the history of early San Francisco. The authors used images from the California Historical Society, Bancroft Library, Society of California Pioneers, Wells Fargo and from the personal collections of several early collectors including Roy D. Graves, Grahame Hardy and William Bronson. The book is arranged by sections including The Comstock, The Age of Leisurely Transport, The Cable Cars, Wells Fargo & Co, Lucky Baldwin, Newspapers, Fire Departments, Resorts, The Palace Hotel, Public and Private Luxury and Chinatown. Each section has a brief introduction and then each illustration is well captioned like many of their other books and it covers every facet of life in San Francisco as the city grew and prospered. Many rare interior photographs of various hotels, bars, ships and other establishments as well as exterior photographs of all the city's historical landmarks. There are some nice portraits of the movers and shakers and a studio photograph of Hank Monk, the celebrated stage driver that at first I thought was Wild Bill Hickok until I read the caption. This was another photograph I have never seen before and was culled from the Nevada State Museum. Because the book only concentrates on the "Golden Era" of San Francisco before the 1906 Earthquake, the reader will find it covers topics that are usually ignored in other volumes. Certainly the authors were trying to cover the history in a different manner from what most authors had done before and since. Their selection of illustrations shows they spent a lot of time searching out rare and never-before-published photographs to tell the story.
