Six Original 1872 Jules Tavernier Wood Engraved Views PASSAIC RIVER New Jersey

Description: Six original antique Victorian-era woodblock engraved prints of paintings by French painter Jules Tavernier. The views are picturesque scenes along and nearby the Passaic River in northern New Jersey. Tavernier was an illustrator and landscape artist whose travels took him to the west coast shortly after he did these six paintings. He soon moved on to Hawaii, where he made a name for himself as a painter of the islands' erupting volcanoes. He died in Honolulu in 1889, and his work is displayed today in private collections and more than a dozen museums and galleries. Each print has an approximate image area of 15 x 23 cm [6" x 9"], on a heavyweight stock with wide margins. Overall size of the indiviudal sheets are 12" x 9". They were published in Picturesque America, a book inspired by the prose of William Cullen Bryant during an era when the rugged landscape of rural America excited awe and wonder among its citizens, most of whom were city dwellers. The illustrations included in this collection include Passaic Falls; Washington Rock; Breakwater, Ramapo; Eagle Rock, Orange; The Passaic Below the Falls; and the Passaic, Below Little Falls. The first four were engraved by Allen Measom; the fifth one was engraved by Alfred Harley; and the sixth one was engraved by John J. Harley. Condition: All six are in very good condition, with no marks, rips, or tears. There are archival tape reinforcements to two of the edges on the reverse side of one of the sheets.
