He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and While studying, he also began writing short stories. After graduating he set up a medical practice at 1 Bush Villas in Elm Grove, Southsea. The practice was not very successful and while waiting for patients, he again began writing stories. In 1887 he wrote "A Study in Scarlet," the first story to feature Sherlock Holmes, who would become one of his most timeless charchters.
