Description: The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes DVD & Novel – Plus a letter from Billy Wilder The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes DVD. 1970. 2 hours and 5 minutes. Color, Closed-captioned, Widescreen, Subtitled, NTSC. Like-new condition. With bonus deleted scenes. Music by Miklos Rozsa. Seven-time Academy Award-winning director Billy Wilder and his longtime writing partner I.A.L. Diamond present their contribution to the Sherlock Holmes saga. Staring Robert Stephens, Colin Blakely, Genevieve Page, and Christopher Lee. Holmes, Watson, Mycroft, a beautiful damsel in distress, Queen Victoria, and the Loch Ness Monster – what more could you want."Poignant, magnificent blend of rueful romance and adventure." American Cinematheque"Acting, photography, and score are tops." Leonard Maltin This was obviously a labor of love on the part of Wilder and Diamond, but when the studio saw the sweeping film's running time of 3 hours and 20 minutes, the top brass balked at releasing it in its full form and ordered Wilder to cut all but the final two episodes. By themselves, these made a wonderful movie. But with this DVD, fans of Holmes and Wilder have a chance to experience what the full production would have been like. Using script excerpts, production stills, and surviving film footage this DVD re-creates the missing scenes, including the prologue in which Dr. Watson's grandson, a Canadian veterinarian (also played by Colin Blakely) retrieves his grandfather's strongbox containing the unpublished manuscript. Other resurrected scenes include "The Curious Case of the Upside Down Room" and "The Adventure of the Dumbfounded Detective." This film is significant for another reason: It was the first major studio production to lift Christopher Lee out of his Hammer Films typecasting as Frankenstein and Dracula and demonstrate his ability to play a wider variety of roles. Had it not been for Wilder, audiences might never have seen Lee as Scaramanga in The Man With The Golden Gun, Count Dooku in Star Wars, or Saruman in The Lord of the Rings. Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, the creators and writers of the BAFTA and Emmy Award-winning series Sherlock, credited The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes as a source of inspiration for their show. The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes Novelization by Michael and Mollie Hardwick. Bantam paperback 1971. Like-new condition. 154 pages. A Letter from Billy Wilder: When my wife and I first watched The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, we were so impressed we sent a fan letter to Wilder. Wonder of wonders, he actually responded. And we will pass along his letter (see photos) to whoever purchases this DVD and book set. (Did Billy Wilder actually type the letter and scrawl his initials on it? Or did he leave that up to his secretary? We'll never know. But by looking at the envelope, you can see that it only cost eight cents to mail a first-class letter in 1971.)
