Description: “Chinese New Year” Vintage 1920’s Mah Jongg Set 152 Tiles Extraordinary Mah Jongg set with gorgeously carved tiles. The set is unique in several regards. The first that strikes you is the quality of the tiles from the carvings to the materials used this was a high end set for the era. The next thing is ratio; 70/30. The extra special bonus to this set are the carved jokers and soap tiles. This set originally had 148 tiles with eight of those being blank (four white dragons and four spare tiles). Four more matching tiles were sourced, so the 8 blanks could be carved for jokers. The image is of a sitting Buddha. The white dragon sinogram was also carved to be consistent with the red and green dragon tiles. It’s a rare feat to have all natural tiles in this style of a set with no joker stickers. The flowers are delightfully playful with children playing traditional Chinese games. Dee Gallo translated the flower set a few years back to mean Chinese new year or wedding. The one bam is a peacock. The wan symbol is highly styled. And the dots suit are plumeria flowers. The tiles were carved by an expert carver based on the quality of design. The paint is also in superb condition. This exquisite set is housed in a large wood five drawer case with brass embellishments and side pockets housing folded wood racks.
