Description: This textile is part of an estate belonging to our family. I know little about this other than an appraisal from Toh-Atin gallery from nearly 40 years ago(1984) describing it as a "Valero Star blanket, with Spider-woman crosses and feathers on sides". I do not know how the blanket was acquired or its exact age. It is likely this was given as a gift to the family before 1984. The only trip I know of this family to the desert southwest was in the 1930's, perhaps it was aquired then. I simply have no way of determining the exact age of this old/vintage/antique blanket and have been able to find only a few sites describing the origins of the Vallero star design in the late 1800's. The Vallero star of this blanket seems particularly beautiful/well designed compared to other examples I could find. I also could find many sites describing the use of Spider-woman crosses and the mention of not "trapping" this design in the weaving. I believe this may be why there a white gap is woven in the dark border seen in picture 5. Perhaps this detail will help date/determine the exact artist. This seems in excellent shape with only some small stains having been stored in a chest many years, and to my eye, is particularly well designed/beautiful.I have also included extreme close-ups to show tightness/weave quality/ I will be happy to answer any questions about the piece or provide more photos.
