Description: This painting has been in my collection since 1980. Bought from G Broach in Torrance CA (Pacific trans shipper from Hawaii and Japan). Natural pigment on silk or linen blend with paper backing and gold trim. Unsigned Okubie-e. Portrait style of “Tachiyaku (Male hero/leading man) kabuki character actor. Red cartouche: Character as actor (untranscribed) Yellow Cartouche: Name of Play (untranscribed) In the style of Shunsen Natori. It appears to have been mounted to a larger screen or perhaps byoubu. Possibly kanban (street sign) for theatre. c. 1920-40. Important note: I bought this painting in this condition- as you can observe it needs proper conservation. And at least rag acid free and moisture free storage. 14 3/4” x 12 1/2” I will envelop this painting in an acid free mat board for shipping. Unless buyer request other handling. (I use a good framer who specializes in Asian arts).
