Description: Estate FindWilliam Wilhelmi, (b. 1939)David Starr Chapman (1958-2023)Ceramic Heart Box1981 We offer a pottery lidded box crafted in 1981 by the ceramic artists William “Bill” Wilhelmi and David Starr Chapman. The round lid features three dimensional hearts and the box is wrapped horizontally with a ceramic lace ribbon topped by a heart centered on each side.The box is glazed in light and dark shades of purple and hand inscribed on the base with Chapman’s five pointed Star, ‘81 and Wilhelmi’s W.The heart box measures 7” in length and 4” in width with a height of 6 3/4”. The lid base measures 4 7/8” in diameter.As seen in the photographs, there are some minor fleabites on the lace ribbon. The ceramic heart embellished lidded box is presented in very good vintage condition. Provenance David Starr Chapman, American (1958-2023)Raised in Corpus Christi, Texas, David would tell stories of spending his summers at his grandparents home in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. In 1964 Elizabeth Taylor moved next door when Richard Burton was filming Night of the Iguana and she would make grilled cheese sandwiches for David and his brother. David later studied ceramics under Bill Wilhelmi in the 1970s and collaborated on many pieces with him. David’s artwork included ceramics, sculpture and silk screening. Many of his ceramics were signed with a five point star flanked by D and C.
