Description: The Grand Antique Mall, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, presents an Antique Winterhalder & Hofmeier 9-Tube, 3-Chime, Long Case, One Piece Grandfather Clock Created in Schwarzenback, Southern Germany. Very tall at 91 inches, the clock has a mahogany case with burl mahogany insets. Glass front door features an arched, carved, Gothic inset with quatrefoil. Upper section door has beveled glass. On both sides of the clock are reeded Ionic columns and, at the very top, a split pediment with central finial. Choice of chimes: Westminster, Whittington, or St. Johns. Winterhalder & Hofmeier’s logo, W&H Sch, is located on a round plate on lock face. "Sch" refers to Schwarzenback, where W & H was founded. Winterhalder & Hofmeier were considered the finest clockmakers of the Victorian era. Circa 1925. Very tall at 91 inches, the clock has a mahogany case with burl mahogany insets. The glass front door features an arched, carved, Gothic inset with quatrefoil. The upper section of the door has beveled glass. On both sides of the clock are reeded Ionic columns and, at the very top, a split pediment with central finial. Choice of Westminster, Whittington, or St. Johns. Above the rolling moon dial is a painted landscape in which a young man gazes toward an onion domed German church. The square brass foliate face has Arabic numbers and 2 elegant, differently patterned, black hands. There are 3 wind holes. A second brass plate located beneath the clock face is that of Carl Hansen & Son who imported the German clock through the port of New York. The clock has an 8-day movement and chimes the quarter hours. On the upper right side is a chime selector with 3 choices: Westminster, Whittington, or St. John’s. Upper left has a selector for chime or silent. Located on the right side of the face is a lever for chime or silent. Access doors are above the clock’s side glass; each have a carved inset backed in original material. Inside the doors are the inner workings and, in this case, almost identical to those of Herschede. The clock's movement is marked C.R.C. C.R. Crookshank, as it was Mr. Crookshank who serviced the grandfather clock (see enclosed records) when Los Angeles was the its home. Stamped at the bottom of the brass dial is M. Winterhalder & Hofmeier, Neustadt, Baden, Germany. The clock has been meticulously maintained and recently cleaned, oiled and given new cables and strings. In 1730, Nicholaus Winterhalder established a clock making shop in Schwarzenback, a prelude to the 1810 clock company established by his son, Thomas Winterhalder. In 1850, Anton Hofmeier joined the company and Winterhalder & Hofmeier was born. Two other W & A locations were Neustadt and Friendenweiler. DIMENSIONS: 91”T x 27”W x 19”D.
