Description: 50 SEEDS OF a PUEBLA VARIETY OF XOCONOSTLE PRICKLY PEAR CACTUS, OPUNTIA MATUDAE with growing instructions. Xoconostle is a species of cacti that produces a tart-tasting fruit that is used to make exotic & delicious traditional Mexican dishes, refreshing drinks, salsas, candies, soups, and stews. Used especially in beans and the most famous dish called 'Mole de Olla'. Xoconostle is an ancient Aztec food which translates to 'sour-prickly pear', or 'Tuna agria' in Spanish. Aside from being used as a food, it is also used to lower blood sugar, triglycerides, and cholesterol. It is also very high in antioxidants and Vitamin C. Xoconostle is propagated via stem cuttings (pads), or by seed. Mature Xoconostle is cold hardy down to 20 degrees F. This species can be grown in pots of in the ground in USDA Zones 9A- and up. Xoconostle seeds can take as long as 4(four) years to sprout due to the hard seed coat and seed dormancy, so one has to be patient if planting from seed! Scarifying the seed can reduce the time it takes for the seed to sprout. Before planting regular Xoconostle seeds, rub them with a fine nail file or fine sand paper to improve germination.
